2024 Spain SCEWC Exhibition: Humanoid robots that sort waste
AETECH for Building Smart Cities
The largest smart city exhibition in the world! The 2024 SCEWC in Spain has successfully concluded. This year, during the smart city exhibition, Aetech attracted a lot of attention by showcasing the largest booth among Korean companies participating alone. Let's take a look back at the exhibition site that once again proved Aetech's technological prowess and the key points of this exhibition!
Largest Booth Among Korean Companies!
Aetech is a startup that dreams of a smart city where robots sort waste. With this corporate mission, it has consistently participated in the SCEWC exhibition in Spain since 2021. This year, it received explosive interest by showcasing the humanoid type Atron at the largest exhibition booth among Korean private companies participating in SCEWC. (It was even highlighted on the main page of the SCEWC website gallery after the exhibition ended!)
The humanoid type Atroid showcased the performance of Atron's sorting capabilities more powerfully. Atron is a robot that can automate the crucial manual sorting process needed in the recycling industry. The humanoid type Atroid can intuitively demonstrate this AI robot sorting solution by showcasing the delicacy of human touch and the precision of robots simultaneously.
Atroid : Humanoid Type Waste Sorting AI Robot
Unlike the existing Atron, Atroid does not have a 'vision box' responsible for AI sorting. The camera in its eyes recognizes the location of the waste to be sorted and judges the material based on the learned data.
Additionally, instead of using Atron's suction method, a gripper technology similar to a human hand was applied to the sorting hand. Sorting using the gripper is somewhat slower than sorting using blowers, but it will present a new solution in working environments that require more delicate tasks.
A Performance that Recreates the 3nity Technology Brand
In particular, the sorting solution of this Atroid can be seen as a realization of our technology brand, '3nity'. 3nity is an AI Powered Robot Control technology that draws out the convergence of different fields such as AI, robot control, and hardware (HW) design. For the waste sorting robot 'Atron' to be completed, AI must make accurate judgments, the robot must pick up the waste, and the facilities must be designed and manufactured to fit the sorting environment.
While each field may not be highly challenging individually, the convergence of these three fields is a unique competitive advantage of Aetech.
The CTO, who oversees Aetech's technology development, also pointed out 'convergence' as the philosophy that underpins the 3nity technology. If you wish to learn more about the tech behind this, please check the stories of Aetech engineers below.

2024 SCEWC, People Thinking About Live Better
Shall we discuss the exhibition now? The SCEWC (Smart City Expo World Congress) is an event that takes place every November in Barcelona, Spain. Smart cities refer to innovative cities that enhance urban competitiveness and pursue sustainability by utilizing information and communication technology (ICT); thus, during SCEWC, many companies shared ideas on how to apply advanced IT technologies to urban transportation, environment, safety, and housing.
This year, under the theme 'LIVE BETTER', it saw active participation from countries, global cities, and organizations. We were able to observe various ways from the perspectives of different countries and companies on how to make our tomorrow sustainable.
Exhibition Highlighting Urban Cultural Characteristics
Especially, it was interesting to glimpse cultural characteristics from the national pavilions of various countries, including Europe, Asia, and the Middle East! While it is not common in Korean exhibitions, many booths at European exhibitions host after-parties towards the end of the event. Accompanied by wine and finger food, it is a time to focus more on business networking.
At this after-party, wine and beer were commonly seen in European national pavilions. However, the Korean pavilion run by KOTRA celebrated with a makgeolli party, which was quite delightful. With DJing added, it indeed felt like a celebration of the 'people of joy.' Seeing Korean characters adorning chairs struck us as a unique visual experience in Europe.
An AI engineer from Aetech, who joined this Spain business trip, is from a European country, and the way he happily recognized his national pavilion resembled how we felt when we saw the Korean pavilion.
Even the corporate booths, not just the national pavilions, reflected the characteristics of their respective countries, making the entire exhibition feel like a glimpse into tomorrow's smart city.
One notable aspect of the smart city exhibition is that, despite being a B2B exhibition, many children and students visited. After all, the citizens living in tomorrow's smart city will be these children.
As a side note, we produced stickers containing our brand message at this exhibition to help better understand Aetech's brand philosophy. Since such merchandise is not common at business exhibitions, it was particularly popular among the young visitors attending the exhibition! The humanoid robot's performance also played a significant role in grabbing the attention of children.
A New Era of Sorting to Be Created in Smart Cities
As we conclude this SCEWC 2024 exhibition, Aetech has had the chance to redefine our role in the process of creating sustainable smart cities. We will open a new era of sorting as a company leading the innovation of the value chain of resource circulation, not only in the ongoing sorting of household waste.
Finally, unfortunately, this year's exhibition prepared by Aetech has come to an end. We will return next year with innovative solutions. Thank you 🙂
